Congressman Kim Votes to Pass Coronavirus Relief Package, Calls for Additional Support for Working Families, Small Businesses

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to pass an funding package with additional coronavirus relief for small businesses and working families.

“I voted for this bill because our working families, frontline health care leaders, and small businesses need it, but it is woefully insufficient for the size of the crisis we face,” said Congressman Kim. “I’m glad that we’ll see additional support for our unemployed neighbors and funding to distribute vaccines, but that has to be the beginning of these efforts, not the end. We need an American Marshall Plan to expedite the shipment of vaccines and ensure the safe and equitable distribution of them. We need to work towards the goal of ensuring that no one is left homeless or without food on the table because of this crisis. And we need a historic investment in jobs and small business support to rebuild the main street businesses that define our communities. I’ve heard a lot of frustration over the past nine months from my neighbors; it’s frustration I share. Congress has not met this moment, but we will have a chance in the coming months to make this right for the American people. I hope we can come together, put aside our differences, and deliver the support our constituents need to attain the health and security required to achieve the American Dream.”

Highlights of the coronavirus relief elements of the bill include:

Help for Working Families

  • Provides unemployed individuals an additional $300 per week for 10 weeks from December 26, 2020-March 14, 2021.
  • Provides $25 billion in critically needed rental assistance for families struggling to stay in their homes and an extension of the eviction moratorium.
  • Provides a new round of direct payments worth up to $600 per adult and child, also ensuring that mixed-status families receive payments.
  • Provides additional $175 million for Older Americans Act “Meals on Wheels” Nutrition Services and extends certain nutrition flexibilities.

Help for Small Businesses

  • Creates a second round of PPP loans for eligible businesses.
  • Borrowers receive full loan forgiveness if they spend at least 60 percent of their PPP second draw loan on keeping people on payroll.

Help to End the Pandemic

  • Provides $8.75 billion to plan, prepare for, promote, distribute, administer, monitor, and track coronavirus vaccines to ensure fast and equal distribution of approved COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Provides $22.4 billion for testing, contact tracing, and surveillance.
  • Provides $3.25 billion to rebuild America’s Strategic National Stockpile.
