Congressman Kim Votes to Pass Bipartisan Joint Resolution to Give American People Voice Before Going to War

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to pass S.J.Res. 68, a Joint Resolution, passed by a bipartisan vote in the Senate, that would require the president get authorization by Congress to engage in further military action against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Joint Resolution, passed by the House and Senate, will now go to the President for his signature.

"The decision to go to war doesn't stop with Congress or the President, it's felt by our brave service men and women, and their families in communities like ours in New Jersey," said Congressman Kim. "This resolution makes sure that if we're going to engage in further military action against Iran, we give those who will bear the brunt of that effort a voice in approving it."

Earlier this year, Congressman Kim voted to pass legislation that would ensure that the decision to send American forces into harm's way is done in line with the Constitution. These bills aimed to stop the continued exploitation of an 18-year old Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) specifically designed to target Saddam Hussein and his regime.

"Let's be clear; this doesn't give Iran a free pass or prevent us from keeping our forces and allies in the region safe," said Congressman Kim. "This bipartisan Joint Resolution simply ensures that any action taken beyond that is made with full deliberation and the support of the American people."

Congressman Kim is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves the Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Readiness and as a Member of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Emerging Threats and Capabilities. Prior to serving in Congress, Congressman Kim served in Afghanistan as Strategic Advisor to Generals David Petraeus and John Allen. Kim went on to serve as Director of Iraq in Obama's National Security Council where he coordinated the crisis response to countering the rise of ISIS.
