Congressman Kim Leads Bipartisan Call for Funding to Support Workforce Training for Resilience Projects
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, in a letter led by Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03), a bipartisan coalition of members of Congress have called on House leadership to include, "robust funding for workforce training programs that help workers build the skills necessary for restoration and resilience projects in communities across the country."
The letter is led by Congressman Kim (NJ-03), Congressman Anthony Brindisi (NY-22), and Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-16). The full letter can be read by clicking here.
"With thousands of businesses closing their doors and millions of Americans losing their jobs as a result of the coronavirus crisis in the last few months alone, it is imperative that Congress take action to support workers and help them build the skills to find employment opportunities," said the members in a letter to Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader McCarthy. "In doing this, Congress can also make a considerable investment in strengthening and adapting our infrastructure in communities hard hit by severe weather, flooding and environmental degradation. Making investments in resiliency now will also reduce federal disaster spending in the future."
The letter goes on to recommend, "funding for workforce training initiatives at the Corporation for National and Community Service and programs within the Department of Labor (DOL), Forest Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)," which could help create, "high-paying jobs in restoration and resilience."
The bipartisan effort has been endorsed by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), National Audubon Society, New Jersey Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, Surfrider Foundation, American Littoral Society, and The Nature Conservancy.
Congressman Kim is a member of the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, where he serves as one of twelve members of the House tasked with conducting oversight over programs aimed at ending the Coronavirus pandemic and helping address the economic impact it's having on the American people.
