Congressman Kim Calls on Administration to Help Veterans, Seniors Collect Direct Relief Payments

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) called on the Trump Administration to require the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration, and the Department of Veterans Affairs to work together to ensure veterans and seniors who don't file tax returns can still access direct relief payments authorized by the CARES Act without having to file a tax return.

"Our seniors and veterans are facing tough times right now during this crisis, the last thing we should be doing is putting hurdles in front of them to access the direct help they need right now," said Congressman Kim. "Requiring seniors and veterans who normally would not have to file a tax return to do so in order to get these benefits is a slap in the face. The IRS, Social Security Administration and VA need to coordinate immediately to ensure our seniors and veterans get the help they need without having to jump through hoops or pay to file a return."

The CARES Act includes direct relief payments to Americans to help get through the economic crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The bill provides these payments as advanced rebate payments from the IRS.

"I'm going to keep fighting for this issue to get fixed, but my office can also help if you're not getting the direct payments you're owed because of this issue," continued Congressman Kim. "If you or someone you know is having issues with these payments, or any other issue related to this crisis, please do not hesitate to reach out."
